A Rolex on a well-fitted strap looks like it was born that way. A Rolex on the wrong strap, with a visible gap between the case and the strap, looks like an afterthought. If you have ever swapped your bracelet for leather or rubber and felt something was off, you have met the lug gap problem. This guide explains why it happens and how to fix it.
The Lug Gap Problem
Fit a standard straight-end strap to a Rolex and you will probably notice a small but obvious space between the strap and the case. Light shows through it, the strap looks like it is floating, and the watch loses the seamless, one-piece look that makes it so recognisable.

It is more than a cosmetic issue. A gap can let dust and moisture collect around the spring bars. It can also let the strap move slightly at the lugs, so it never sits quite right on the wrist.
Why the Gap Happens
The cause is the shape of the case. Rolex cases are built with solid, sculpted lugs and a rounded profile that curves down toward the wrist. A straight-end strap has a flat edge, so it can only touch the case at a single point. Everywhere else, a gap opens up.

The factory bracelet avoids this because it has endlinks, solid pieces shaped to fill the space between the lugs and sit flush against the case. Take the bracelet off and replace it with a generic strap, and that custom-fitted piece goes with it.
Curved End Leather Strap
The simplest fix is a curved end strap. Instead of a flat edge, the end of the strap is moulded to follow the curve of the case, so it sits snug against the middle case with no gap.

The advantages are clear:
- A seamless look. The strap flows straight out of the case, much like the original.
- Genuine leather comfort. A quality curved end leather strap softens and develops character over time.
- Easy to fit. It uses the standard spring bar and needs no extra parts.
- Better protection. With no gap, less debris reaches the case and spring bars.
Curved end straps are a good choice for anyone who wants the look of a purpose-made strap without a complicated installation.
Endlinks for Greater Variety
Curved end straps are not the only way to close the gap. Endlinks, separate metal pieces that attach to the case, give you much more freedom.
An endlink is built to fit the lugs of a specific case and sits flush against it. The other end has standard lug-style spring bar holes, which means you can fit almost any standard strap to it. Leather, rubber, NATO, canvas or alligator all work, and you can change them as often as you like.

For Rolex owners who like to switch looks between a dress strap on Monday and a sporty rubber strap at the weekend, endlinks open up a lot of options.
Using the Original Endlinks
If you still have the endlinks from your original Rolex bracelet, they can be reused, with one caution. Genuine Rolex endlinks are made to be part of the bracelet system, and the way they attach to the bracelet is not always compatible with aftermarket straps. Removing them can also risk scratching the case, and the fit varies between models and bracelet generations.
If you do go this route, take your time and use the right tools. Many owners prefer to keep the original bracelet and endlinks in perfect condition, since they matter for resale value, and use a separate set of endlinks for strap changes.
